Police responded to 958 calls for service during one-week period in Chilliwack
Aggressive drunk driver taken into custody after confronting Chilliwack officer Published 12:03 pm Thursday, July 16, 2026 A bear that ripped through a tent at Cultus Lake, and a drunk driver who confronted police were two incidents highlighted by RCMP in their ‘weekly snapshot’. Chilliwack RCMP responded to 958 calls for service for the week of July 6-12.
The impaired driving incident happened on Thomas Road where the driver stopped, got out of his vehicle and confronted an officer who was parked on the road. “The man continued to behave aggressively and was detained. The officer detected an odour of liquor on the driver who refused to comply with a roadside breath sample,” Cpl.
Carmen Kiener stated in the July 16 press release. “The driver was held in custody until he was sober and issued an immediate roadside prohibition upon his release, and his vehicle was impounded.” On Coote Street, police pulled over a vehicle where they found a passenger who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for prohibited driving, the driver who was impaired, and suspected illicit drugs and weapons.
The passenger was arrested and held for court, and the drugs and weapons were seized. The driver provided roadside breath samples, which resulted in an immediate roadside prohibition, and the vehicle was impounded. In another incident, police attempted to arrest another man with an outstanding arrest warrant who was riding a bicycle near Hocking Avenue.
“When officers attempted to arrest him, he fled on foot but was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit. A search incidental to arrest located suspected illicit drugs, suspected break-and-enter tools, and weapons, all contrary to his court-ordered conditions. He was held in custody for court.”
Over the last week, Chilliwack RCMP received several reports of vehicle thefts and attempted vehicle thefts throughout Chilliwack, including on Victoria Avenue, Chilliwack River Road, Trethewey Avenue, Cleveland Avenue, Canterbury Drive, Alpine Crescent, and at a hotel parking lot on Young Road. Several older-model pickup trucks were among the vehicles targeted. In one incident, a trailer and ATV were also stolen.
“On a positive note, Chilliwack RCMP saw a decrease in residential break and enters throughout the community last week.” Kiener noted. In Cultus Lake, police had to deal with bike thefts, bear problems, and issues on the water.
“Two bears reportedly wandered into a campground at Cultus Lake overnight, with one bear ripping into a tent. The bears are believed to be returning to the area due to unsecured refuse,” Kiener said. “Campers are reminded to properly store food, secure attractants, and follow bear-safe practices to help prevent wildlife encounters.”
RCMP increased patrols in the Cultus Lake area following several recent reports of bike thefts and suspicious people checking vehicle door handles near Lindell Beach. At Main Beach, a boat entered the designated swim zone, cutting the rope that marked the swimming area and dislodging a buoy. “The operator was identified and issued a $300 violation ticket for operating a motorized vessel within a swim zone.
The operator was also issued a $288 violation ticket for failing to possess the required boating licence. Additional safety equipment deficiencies were noted, and the operator was provided with education regarding boating safety requirements.” Over at Jade Bay, police found people on two jet skis who were reportedly stunting within a designated no-wake zone.
“Neither operator was able to produce the required registration documents. Both were directed to leave the water and complied with police instructions.” Police responded to a collision involving an ATV and an e-bicycle on the Liumchen Service Road where a youth sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.
“All parties involved were wearing appropriate helmets and safety gear, which likely helped prevent more serious injuries.” And Chilliwack Search and Rescue was called to help an injured hiker on Goat Peak near Chilliwack Lake.
