Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba (MMSM) announced Wednesday that all paper cups can now be included with all other items that can go in blue bins.

Another item can now be thrown in blue bins across the province. Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba (MMSM) announced Wednesday that all paper cups can now be included with all other items that can go in blue bins. “Adding paper cups to the blue bin removes a long-standing exception and makes recycling simpler, clearer, and more convenient,” said Christa Rust, the executive director of MMSM, in a news release.

Paper cups were previously not allowed due to the coating on the inside and some of the dyes used in them. However, after consultations with recycling services, it was determined the cups can be sorted with mixed paper. MSMM said the lids for coffee cups are still not recyclable, so people are told to empty their cups, take the lids off, and then put the cups in the bins.
