If you’ve seen the nightly home reset trend online, why not try it yourself? Here’s how to achieve the perfect routine.
Article content If you’re on TikTok, you’ve probably seen some creators post their “nightly home reset” before bedtime. I’ve also seen people online calling the method “putting your house to bed,” which I think is the perfect way of wording it. Just as you do for yourself, it’s important to get your home in a good state before the day is done.
It makes for great content for a reason – it’s relaxing and satisfying to watch; now imagine how relaxing and satisfying it is to accomplishit. Once you’ve established a routine you can handle, the nightly home reset will likely become so ingrained that it’ll become second nature. Below, I break down an easy nightly reset routine and everything you need to accomplish it.
What is a nightly home reset? As I mentioned, I like to think of a nightly home reset the same way you think of your own bedtime routine – a habit that helps wrap up the day. It’s so much easier to relax and prepare to sleep when you know that you’re waking up to a tidy house.
Most nightly home resets consist of no more than five basic steps. For my nightly home reset, I keep it to four: - Tidy the kitchen - Remove clutter - Prep for the morning - Close up shop Let’s dive deeper into each step. Tidy the kitchen This step doesn’t mean cleaning the kitchen — no need to mop the floors or clear out the fridge.
It means quickly getting rid of any mess you can see right when you walk in, like putting any dishes away, giving the counter a quick wipe and moving outstanding items back into drawers, closets or wherever they came from. Here’s what I like to use: - 2-Tier Dish Drying Rack with Drain Board, $50 CAD - 3-Pack ATTITUDE All-Purpose Cleaner Spray, $30 CAD - Microfiber Cleaning Cloths, Pack of 12, $12 CAD - Finish Quantum Ultimate Dishwasher Detergent Pods, 82 Tabs, $26 CAD Remove clutter Removing clutter is arguably the most important step.
I think when life gets busy, it’s easy to just throw everything in the corner and call it a day. Once you’ve designated a place for everything to go at the end of the day, removing clutter gets so much easier. Bonus points if you actually donate or throw away any items that aren’t useful to you anymore.
Keeping them around just means having one more thing taking up space. I start with flat surfaces and work my way from there. Are there glasses on the coffee table?
Pens? Remotes? Are there toys on the floor?
Yoga mat still on the ground from your afternoon workout? Find a place for everything that is out of sight, and put it away. Here’s what I like to use: - Blanket Basket for Living Room, $37 CAD - IKEA BRANÄS Basket, $20 CAD - IKEA SKUBB Organizer With 6 Compartments, $14 CAD - EKET Storage Combination With Legs, $140 CAD Prep for the morning Taking the time to set yourself up for a good morning will put you in a great headspace when you wake up.
Instead of feeling rushed or overwhelmed when you wake up, your nightly reset helps improve the flow of your day. This means laying out your clothes, making breakfast and/or lunch (bonus points if you prepped your food for the week already) and putting your keys and work bag at the door. Here’s what I like to use: - STANLEY Assembly Lunch Box, $33 CAD -
Bentgo Prep 1-Compartment Meal-Prep Containers, $17 CAD - Italian Leather Triple Compartment Tote, $210 CAD - 4-Pack Key Holder, $10 CAD Close up shop The last step, closing up shop, is the quickest step and doesn’t really require anything other than a room-to-room look over. You’re looking for any lights left on, any doors that need to be locked and windows that need closing. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready for bed and a great day to come.
