Meta just pulled the plug on a new Instagram AI feature after everyone realized how creepy it actually was. When the company launched its new Muse AI Image model, it included a tool that let anyone generate AI images of you simply by tagging your Instagram account. You didn’t even have to give your permission.

After a massive wave of complaints from regular users and Hollywood talent agencies, Meta admitted the feature missed the mark and disabled it completely. The way this tool worked was a privacy nightmare. If your Instagram profile was public, a total stranger could type your handle into a chat with Meta AI and create permanent, weird remixes using your face.

To make matters worse, Meta turned this feature on by default for everyone. If you wanted to protect your photos, you had to hunt through your settings menu to turn it off manually or switch your entire profile to private. Hollywood fights back The backlash hit Meta almost instantly.

Variety reported that major Hollywood groups stepped in right away to protect their people. Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which represents big stars like Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, went straight to Meta to complain. The agency released a firm statement saying that nobody’s name, face, or creative work should ever be used by an AI model without clear, written consent.

At the same time, the SAG-AFTRA union warned its members to jump into their Instagram settings and opt out immediately to protect their likenesses. Meta scrambled to fix the mess, and both organizations have already praised the company for moving fast to kill the tool.
