Kamloops SPCA looking for foster homes for furry friends Published 10:55 am Monday, July 13, 2026 Kitten season is here, and the Kamloops branch of the BC SPCA is looking for foster families who can take in kittens, or any other critters, either on a short- or long-term basis. The shelter is getting busier (and more full) trying to keep up with the demand for space as mother cats and their kittens are brought in. Because of the limited space at the shelter, it means that those who are looking to surrender pets might have to go on a wait list until there’s room.

That’s why the Kamloops SPCA is asking animal lovers in the community and surrounding area to open up their hearts and homes to pets in need. “Anyone who is curious about volunteering as a foster is encouraged to apply,” says Daria Evans, manager of the BC SPCA Kamloops animal care centre. “Whether you’ve had pets your whole life or just want to ‘test drive’ what being a pet guardian is like, we’re grateful for anyone who applies and does the training.

All the supplies are provided, vet care is covered and arranged, and we can work around vacation schedules and animal preferences. It doesn’t need to be a big commitment. Short-term homes are just as helpful as long-term.”

Evans is currently fostering a mother cat with a litter of kittens, and says that the reality is different to what some people might picture. “I think when people imagine fostering a litter of kittens or puppies, it sounds very daunting, but the reality is that the mama usually takes care of everything. There’s actually very little work required when they’re young; it’s really just making sure everyone is clean and eating well, making sure mama is getting lots of love and attention.

Even with bottle feeding, it’s not easy but it’s not impossible. People make it work even with a full-time job.” While any type of foster home would be greatly appreciated, the BC SPCA Kamloops especially needs foster homes for the following: – Dogs, including bottle-fed puppies or larger breeds – Kittens, including bottle-fed kittens or moms with young kittens – Small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, etc.) –

Foster homes with no other animals – Animals with medical needs (e.g., recovering from spay surgery, requiring medication, animals on quarantine) Anyone interested in fostering can take a quiz to see if fostering is right for them, or apply online. Foster training can be completed online on your own time, and typically takes 30-120 minutes depending on the category of animals.
