Two days before that, Iqaluit firefighters attended a fire at the landfill. Crews worked until midnight when they thought the fire was finally out. On July 3, at around 1 p.m., the fire had reignited and quickly spread to the rest of the landfill.

Fire Chief Mark Wyatt told Nunatsiaq New the fire could take weeks to put out. Wyatt said several people had been seen near the dump before the fire started and that the incident is under investigation.
