Letter: Nature must come first Published 2:27 pm Tuesday, July 14, 2026 Mayor and council, As we observe the new normal, drought conditions in our valley and our mountains, the protection of nature must become a priority for the future security of all residents. Our watersheds are the lifeblood of our water supply. Since 2017 when I moved into North Cowichan from Nanaimo, I have brought to the attention of council, the importance of our water supply.

I have encouraged council to limit growth based on our water capacity. This particular issue is ultimately important ahead of any other issue that comes before council including any future land development. Nature must come FIRST.

It should be clear to council that when we see wildfire on our own municipal mountain that our watersheds are under attack by climate change even in our immediate area. I expect the Biodiversity Policy will move forward with unanimous support by every member of council. Sincerely, Bryan Senft North Cowichan
