LETTER: “Why is the UCP doing the separatists job for them?”

If Alberta separatists want a referendum, perhaps they should vote for an independence party and win a provincial election.

I’ve noticed blue signs popping up on lawns in our neighbourhoods asking why does Quebec get to have a referendum? There have been two sovereignty-association referendums in Quebec, in 1980 and 1995. Both were the result of the governing Parti Québécois, as part of their elected mandate led by their Premier’s René Lévesque (1980) and Jacques Parizeau (1995).

Quebec constituents elected the PQ based on their stated platform of sovereignty association. That’s why they got two referendums. So, if Alberta separatists want a referendum, perhaps they should vote for an independence party and win a provincial election.

Perhaps a better lawn sign would be “why is the UCP doing the separatists job for them?” Ian Payne, St. Albert
