Smart glasses are getting open backlash. Singer Lorde, aka Ella Yelich-O’Connor, is sailing on the same boat. During a concert at the Mad Cool Festival 2026 in Madrid, Spain, the singer shared her two cents on smart glasses.

While they’re not very encouraging, she sort of made it clear that she won’t be sponsored by Ray-Ban, Samsung, or any other brand making the tech. Those present at the concert captured the moment and shared it online.

She further adds that “ You don’t know if someone is wearing sunglasses or if they’re wearing those f****d up f*****g... Can I just say, for the record, ‘F**k the Glasses.’ Don’t get the glasses.

Not sexy. “ Evidently, she doesn’t point fingers at any particular tech brand, but as we know, the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses dominate the space. It looks like the built-in camera is the main cause of the problems.

It’s unlikely Lorde could be talking about non-camera smart glasses, like the Even Realities Even G2. What makes this interesting is that Ray-Ban is a sponsor of the festival and had an on-site presence. Also, Blackpink’s Jennie, who performed directly after Lorde on the main stage, is a global ambassador for Ray-Ban x Meta.

It also recruited Kylie Jenner for a special edition, called the Starfire Kylie Edition. As for Lorde, she recently invested in music app Lume, taking on big names in the industry like Spotify with a “buy once and own forever” system. For what it’s worth, Ray-Ban Meta helped make smart glasses popular again.

But then the growing backlash feels almost similar to what Google Glass faced over a decade ago, which eventually led to its disappearance due to social stigma. Regardless, we’ll probably see more models come our way. Like the Google and Samsung pair, which will hit later this year.
