In Loving Memory Mark Anthony Degner Jan. 4, 1962 – June 16, 2026 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mark Degner. Growing up in Alberta, Mark enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with his family.

His passions were spending time outdoors and in nature with family, especially in the Rocky Mountains near Jasper. He attended the University of Alberta and received a B.Sc. and then an M.Sc.

with a focus on Ornithology. Later, as an Assistant Professor at McEwan University in Edmonton, he had a huge passion for sharing his interests with others. Friends and colleagues, both here and in Alberta, were precious to him.

For many years Mark taught a Tropical Rainforest Ecology course which included a research trip to a biological field station in the Ecuadorian rain forest. On several occasions these trips included the Galapagos Islands, definitely a biologist’s dream! Mark had a long interest in photography and, along with his wife Leslie, sold many of his images over the years.

Their mutual love of photography, hiking, camping, birding, canoeing, and music fostered their relationship for 35 years. After retirement, he and Leslie moved to Gabriola. During their 6 years here, they have forged many great friendships.

Leslie would like to thank everyone who has touched Mark’s life. Friends and family have been a great support to them. Mark requested that no service be held.

Please raise a glass in his honour. In lieu of flowers please consider supporting the following; GROWLS, Parkinson’s Society of BC, or BC Cancer Foundation.
