The Montreal SPCA’s investigation unit seized 121 animals from a rural residence on Montreal’s South Shore on July 2 after officials say they found them living in severely neglected conditions during a heat wave. The SPCA said many of the animals had no access to water, exposing them to significant risks of dehydration and suffering. Some also had lesions that could cause them significant pain.

“Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot reveal all the details of what our teams were able to observe at the scene,” the SPCA said in a social media post. “Once the seizure was complete, the animals were entrusted to the teams of the Montreal SPCA shelter, in order to receive the care, they urgently needed.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by SPCA de Montréal (@spcamontreal)

The animals rescued included 30 dogs and puppies, nine horses, 28 chickens, five roosters, 25 ducks, 14 turkeys, four rabbits, four quails, one cat and one goat. “For many of them, this is only the beginning of a long healing process that will require weeks, sometimes months, of rehabilitation,” the SPCA said. The identities of the animals’ owners have not been released.

The SPCA said its investigation remains ongoing, and no charges have been filed with the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions. Officials added that because the investigation is continuing, the number of animals involved may change.
