A motorcyclist was killed Saturday afternoon after being struck by a van in Sherbrooke, in the Eastern Townships.

A motorcyclist was killed Saturday afternoon after being struck by a van in Sherbrooke, in the Eastern Townships. The crash occurred around 4:45 p.m. near 2750 Queen-Victoria Blvd, according to a news release from Martin Carrier, a spokesperson for the Sherbrooke Police Department.

According to initial reports, a 34-year-old driver violently struck the motorcycle, which was travelling in the opposite direction. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead. “Criminal evidence observed at the scene led our patrol officers to arrest the driver of the pickup truck,” Carrier said.

Queen-Victoria between des Écossais Rd. and des Sables St. was closed to traffic for several hours. An investigation is underway. The Sherbrooke Police Service (SPS) issued a statement on Sunday stating that authorities have good reason to believe the van’s driver was driving while impaired by drugs.

SPS investigators are currently searching for a motorist who reportedly spoke with the driver involved after stopping at the scene of the accident. This individual may have information that could help resolve the investigation. The police service is asking anyone who may have information on this matter to call 819-821-5555.
