New FoodCycler organics drop-off location open at Lakeside Recycling Depot

The City of Nelson has opened a new drop-off bin at the Lakeside Recycling Depot (70 Lakeside Drive) for pre-treated food waste from the Food Cycler.

As part of the 2026 expansion of the pre-treated organics program, the new bin provides participating residents with one central drop-off location. Pilot drop-off bins previously located at Safeway, Lakeside Sports Fields, and 80 Lakeside Drive are now closed.

Accepted materials The bin accepts FoodCycler end product (dry, pre-treated food waste) along with whole used carbon pellets from the appliance filter. Not acceptable This bin is for FoodCycler material only. Food scraps, yard waste, and other organics are not accepted.

Location, location The Lakeside Recycling Depot is located at 70 Lakeside Drive. Summer hours (April 1 to Sept. 30) are Monday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Questions about the bin can be directed to [email protected] or 250-352-TALK (8255). The Lakeside Recycling Depot site is operated by the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK), but this new drop-off bin is managed by the City of Nelson.

Why the change? As the program expands to serve more households, the city is moving to a single drop-off location with a bin that is cleaner and easier to use and can accommodate higher participation. It is located at a supervised site where it can be secured after hours to keep wildlife safe.

Get a FoodCycler The 2026 program expansion provides up to 1,000 more FoodCyclers to Nelson residents, which will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. All households that receive curb-side garbage collection from the City of Nelson are eligible for FoodCycler at no cost, with direct delivery to their address.
