By Matthew McCully Thanks to a partnership between Mission Unitaînés, the federal and provincial governments and support from the City of Sherbrooke, 100 new housing units will be built in the municipality to accommodate low-income seniors. The new housing is part of the third phase of a project spearheaded by Mission Unitaînés, a non-profit with a mission to build quality, affordable housing quickly and efficiently for seniors across the province. Phase 3, which will include the construction of 300 units (100 in Sherbrooke, 100 in Montreal, and 100 in Trois-Rivières) will bring the total project to over 2,000 affordable housing units built for independent seniors across Quebec.
The announcement was made at Sherbrooke City Hall Wednesday, July 15, with key stakeholders in attendance, including Karine Boivin Roy, Quebec Minister Responsible for Housing, Marianne Dandurand, MP for Compton—Stanstead, Geneviève Hébert, MNA for Saint-François, Marie-Claude Bibeau, Mayor of Sherbrooke, Laure Letarte-Lavoie, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Office municipal d’habitation de Sherbrooke (OMHS) and Caroline Sauriol, President and CEO of Mission Unitaînés. During the press conference, Karine Boivin Roy pointed out that the first 17 buildings constructed by Mission Unitaînés led to savings of $33 million, put towards the current phase of the project.
According to a press release about the housing announcement, government investments related to the partnership with Mission Unitaînés total $400.1 million. They stem from the Canada-Quebec Agreement under the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) and new matching investments announced by Quebec ($30 million for the current phase). The City of Sherbrooke is covering the costs associated with land acquisition and will provide a total financial contribution of approximately $4.5 million.
A philanthropic donation of $500,000 from Luc Maurice, Chair of the Board of Directors of Mission Unitaînés, rounds out the financial package. Caroline Sauriol, President and CEO of Mission Unitaînés, described the organization as having a magic formula that brings together a firm of architects, a firm of engineers and a variety of professionals for an agile team that can manage 10-12 projects at the same time. “If we step back, in 2023, Mr. Maurice had a vision.
He said there are two crises: the aging population, and a housing crisis,” Sauriol explained. “I know how to build, I know how to build well,” Maurice told Sauriol. She applauded the audacity of government officials, willing to get involved with Mission Unitaînés at the early stages before any locations or concrete plans were in place. ...
