A witness tells Castanet News the UXO was found in the lake and brought to shore by a curious swimmer. RCMP officers are now at the scene, securing an area around the UXO and it is expected a police explosive disposal unit or the Department of National Defense will be called in.

Kalamalka Lake like many parts of the North Okanagan, is a known legacy site for UXOs, according to the federal government. In 1911, the City of Vernon asked the Department of National Defence to establish a military camp in the area. “Training with live rounds, involving artillery, mortars, tanks, and small arms is known to have taken place in some areas post WWII right up to the mid 70’s,” said a federal government page.

The most common UXO encounters in Vernon involve live and expended 2- or 3-inch mortars. If you find one, the DND urges you to not touch it, leave the area and call 911.
