RCMP investigating after prisoner found dead at P.E.I. correctional facility

P.E.I. RCMP say they are investigating the death of a prisoner at a provincial correctional facility on P.E.I. P.E.I. RCMP say they are investigating the death of a prisoner at a provincial correctional facility on P.E.I. Police say officers responded to a deceased prisoner at the facility at about 5:15 a.m. on July 16. According to the RCMP, the prisoner who was in their 50s was serving a sentence at the time. The prisoner was found unresponsive during routine inmate checks.

Emergency medical assistance was called, but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. RCMP said there is no evidence of foul play at this time. Police said whenever a death occurs involving a prisoner in a correctional facility, an investigation is conducted on behalf of the Office of the Coroner.

The investigation is ongoing, and police say they continue to work closely with the coroner’s office.
