With school bus routes reaching capacity due to growing enrollment, Rocky View Schools has set an Aug. 1 cut-off for guaranteed first-day transportation.

The deadline to register for school bus transportation with Rocky View Schools (RVS) is Aug. 1. To access bus service on the first day of school, families must register by the deadline. A step-by-step guide to registration is available on the RVS website.

“RVS is proud to safely transport more than 13,000 students every day to and from their school,” the Senior Manager of Transportation Morley Kostecky said. “By registering for transportation as soon as possible, families can guarantee their children will be assigned a bus route and bus stop in time for the beginning of the school year.” Due to the complex route planning involved to transport students who ride the bus with RVS, registration received after Aug. 1 will not be processed in time to access the bus on the first day of school.

Families who register late will experience service delays of up to three weeks before their children can ride the bus. Transportation fees will be $415 for students in Grades 1 to 12 and $207.50 for Kindergarten students. This fee applies to all busing including specialized transportation.

Students needing to access a second stop will have an additional fee of $415 for the seat they occupy on the additional route. Information about transportation fees is available on the RVS website. Transportation is available to eligible students in Kindergarten – Grade 6 who reside 1.5 kilometers or more from their designated school, or students in Grade 7 – 12 and reside two or more kilometers from their designated school.

Due to increasing enrolment, many buses are at or near capacity. Because of this RVS can not guarantee transportation to students who do not meet eligibility criteria. More information about eligibility and how to apply for consideration if your child is not eligible is available on the Transportation Registration & Fee payment page of the RVS website.

To help new riders, RVS is pleased to once again host My First Ride from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 24 and 25 at the RVS Education Centre (2651 Chinook Winds Drive SW, Airdrie). My First Ride is not a drop-in event; the program begins promptly at 6 p.m. and will be the same each night. Families are welcome to attend on the date that works best for them.

More information about My First Ride will be available on the RVS website later this summer.
