River starts to drop around flood-ready Brandon in western Manitoba

A city in western Manitoba says high water levels on the Assiniboine River have started to decline.

BRANDON — A city in western Manitoba says high water levels on the Assiniboine River have started to decline. The City of Brandon says the river retreated by about eight centimetres overnight but still has a ways to go. Levels climbed just over two metres in less than a week and peaked Sunday night.

The city says its reinforced flood barriers are working to limit any damage. Other communities in Manitoba have been hit hard by flooding this year, after two major rainfalls. Flooding has closed the regional hospital in Dauphin for months and other towns, including Swan River, are also working to recover.
