A small wildfire is burning near Salmo in the wake of Friday morning’s lightning storm that swept through the West Kootenay.

The Aspen Creek wildfire is four kilometres east of the village but 2.5 kilometres east of Airport Road on the other side of the Salmo River. Although the wildfire is listed as “out of control,” an initial attack crew has been dispatched to the area, noted on the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) website at 1:01 p.m. On the East Shore, another out-of-control wildfire has been added to the list of small, lightning-caused fires that have sprung up in the wake of the early Friday morning thunderstorm.

Listed at .01 hectares, the wildfire near Pilot Point — 1.5 kilometres west of the community of Crawford Bay — has had one initial attack crew dispatched to attend. Near Nakusp Across the Upper Arrow Lake from Nakusp, a .009-hectare wildfire is being reported by BCWS as of 11:33 a.m. The cause of the fire is listed as "under investigation" in the Low Pass area, but no resources have been committed to the fire, nor are there any area restrictions or evacuation alerts.
