Reviewed by Spencer Nadeau Stories of survival and human struggle can be harrowing narratives to choose for leisure reading. One such example of this type of memoir is Yossi Ghinsberg’s Jungle . Based on Ghinsberg’s 1981 travels in Bolivia, the book details his near three-week ordeal lost in the Bolivian Amazon.

Having led as straightforward a life as one could in Israel, Ghinsberg seeks an adventurous and nomadic life. Far from the Israeli navy that he had served in for three years, Ghinsberg embarks on numerous travels throughout Africa, Alaska, and Mexico. His travels lead him to South America where he hikes from Venezuela to Colombia.

It is in Colombia that he meets a Swiss teacher named Markus Stamm. The two strike up a keen friendship, and Yossi and Markus decide to travel together to La Paz, Bolivia. Yossi is initially hesitant as his original plan was to continue through Colombia to Peru to visit Machu Picchu.

However, Markus’s kind words and reassurance convince Yossi to join him in heading to Bolivia. Once in La Paz, Ghinsberg is struck by the beauty of the place, the people, and the culture. It here that he befriends an American photographer, Kevin Gale.

They become close friends along with Stamm. As he explores La Paz further, Ghinsberg is approached by a man named Karl Ruprechter, a mysterious Austrian who claims to be a travelling geologist. Ghinsberg is awestruck by Ruprechter’s offer to go exploring in some uncharted Amazon jungle, searching for gold and a remote Indigenous village.

After a meeting with Kevin and Markus, the four men agree to the journey. Kevin is by far the most skeptical, as he is a man of procedure and is displeased with Karl for not be able to provide a solid map of the area. As a replacement, Karl offers a handwritten map of the jungle from memory. ...
