The post Samsung Just Revealed the Display Technology Behind Its New Foldables — and It Involves Titanium appeared first on Android Headlines .
Samsung has just announced display technology for its upcoming foldable smartphones. It’s called Flex Titanium Technology, and it will debut on July 22 at the company’s second Unpacked event of the year. Samsung’s Flex Titanium display tech is here for the upcoming foldables The company says that this tech is “built on seven generations of foldable innovation and engineering expertise.”
This redesigned display structure utilizes structural and material advancements, which aim to deliver a “more refined viewing experience with enhanced durability and reduced crease visibility.” The Flex Titanium tech integrates two titanium-based components, Samsung says. The first is a titanium-alloy film, while the second is a titanium plate.
These two are supposed to work together to “balance slimness, flexibility and strength within the foldable display structure.” Samsung says that this new approach required a material strong enough to withstand external shock, and yet flexible enough to endure repeated folding. On top of that, it needed to be thin enough to fit within a refined device structure.
All things considered, Samsung finds the balance in titanium. This was an engineering challenge The company says that titanium “has been used in some of the most demanding applications, including satellite antennas and the wheels of a Mars rover.” Using it in this manner represented an engineering challenge, though the company apparently succeeded.
The titanium-alloy film is a component that supports the display from within. It sits below the OLED panel. Compared with polymer film, it provides 20 times greater mechanical stiffness.
Below all this sits a robust titanium plate. It allows tighter bonding with the display module by eliminating air gaps between the module and the adhesive on the plate. This new structure should provide “more stable support underneath the display when unfolded while retaining the flexibility needed to accommodate repeated folding.”
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8 are coming on July 22. The Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 will also be announced.
