'Just because we seem to have plenty of water does not mean we should use it wastefully.'

Regarding Luc Kazimirski’s letter, “District virtue signalling on water,” published July 1 (online). Just because we seem to have plenty of water does not mean we should use it wastefully. Every litre of water from the tap has to be treated and every litre that goes down the drain is treated again before returning to the water system.

Consider the cost to do this. In the summer, we use more water as we water lawns and flowers, wash cars, etc. This increases demand and therefore more treatment.

That is a major cost and why most jurisdictions charge based on usage. We should not waste something just because it appears it is abundant. This does not respect the land.
