Wildfire smoke prompts OPL officials to call off contest versus Vaughan on Wednesday

Article content Ontario Premier League officials and the Sudbury Cyclones were forced to postpone a scheduled OPL 1 home game against Vaughan Azzurri on Wednesday night due to poor air quality, with plans to play in two weeks’ time. Azzurri did travel to Sudbury for the contest, which was to kick off at 7:30 p.m., but a haze of wildfire smoke drifting in from the northwest ultimately prompted the postponement after a half-hour delay. Newcomers to OPL 1 soccer who are owners of a 3-10-1 record and 11th place in the 12-team loop, the Cyclones hoped to continue their climb out of relegation range after a big 2-1 win over second-place Scrosoppi FC this past Saturday.

Vaughan is fifth in the league at 5-2-8. The Cyclones face a key visit to Burlington SC, 10th at 4-7-3, this coming Saturday. Start time on the Corpus Christi pitch is 4:40 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Sudbury Cyclones B team will host Inter-Toronto III at James Jerome Sports Complex in OPL 3 play on Saturday at 4 p.m. and the Cyclones women are also in Burlington for OPL 3 action at 1 p.m. X: @Ben__leeson Bluesky: @benjaminleeson.bsky.social Instagram/Threads: @ben_leeson
