The writing on the wall for OnePlus just got a whole lot worse. While the tech world already braced for the brand’s immediate departure from the US and Europe this week, a new report claims that the retreat is far more severe than anyone anticipated. According to a person with knowledge of the matter, parent company Oppo plans to completely pull OnePlus out of India and every other international market outside of China by 2027.
The radical move marks the final chapter in the global scaling down of a brand that once stood as the darling of the Android enthusiast community. What began as a strategic pivot away from Western markets is now a total retreat, turning OnePlus into a strictly domestic, China-only brand within the next year and a half. The breaking point for Oppo’s sub-brands This massive consolidation comes as parent company Oppo fights severe financial headwinds, surging component costs, and aggressive legal disputes, Bloomberg reports.
To streamline its operations, Oppo is executing a top-to-bottom restructuring of its mobile business. Aside from shrinking OnePlus, Oppo is pulling its other sub-brand, Realme, completely out of the Chinese market to focus its sales exclusively on Northern Europe and the Nordic region, where it has maintained stronger momentum. The escalating cost of memory and key components has made it incredibly difficult for phone makers to manufacture high-quality, budget-friendly devices.
The shortfall hit OnePlus’s popular mid-range Nord lineup especially hard. “Nord” used to be the brand’s main volume driver in big smartphone hubs such as India. Compounding these supply chain struggles are geopolitical pressures and a major trade-secret lawsuit from Apple.
All these factors together forced Oppo to rethink its international footprint. OnePlus just couldn’t find a foothold against the duopoly of Apple and Samsung in massive consumer markets such as the US. The brand also lagged far behind Google and Motorola.
Plus, its latest flagship, the OnePlus 15, suffered a rocky introduction with significant delays due to government shutdowns. This dampened its launch momentum. The post The Global Retreat:
