Vernon cannabis warehouse among 4 raided by provincial unit Pot warehouse shut down Marijuana may be legal in Canada, but there are still rules in place for producing weed and associated products. The B.C. government announced Wednesday that its Community Safety Unit, which targets illegal cannabis, has conducted raids at four warehouses in Richmond, Vancouver and Vernon since May, seizing cannabis and related products worth nearly $8 million. And that amount could change after further processing of the items seized.

The B.C. government says operators found to be selling or producing unregulated cannabis may be subject to administrative penalties. The location of the warehouses raided by police were not revealed. The Community Safety Unit has mostly avoided enforcement on First Nations land, leading to a proliferation of grey-market stores on many reserves in the Okanagan Valley — something the legal industry has complained about.

The B.C. government says CSU’s primary objective is to achieve voluntary compliance through education and progressive enforcement. "However, where businesses continue to produce and/or sell illegal and unregulated cannabis products, the CSU will take progressive enforcement action," said the B.C. government news release. "Enforcement action is determined on a case-by-case basis, considering factors such as public safety, links to organized crime, impact to the legal market and the province’s commitment to reconciliation."
