Wildfire smoke prompts Sudbury Pride to move indoors Saturday

Air Quality Health Index predicting poor air quality for later Friday and on Saturday

Article content The threat of dangerously poor air quality has prompted Fierté Sudbury Pride organizers to move most of its flagship Pride Week festivities scheduled for Saturday from Larch Street to the Sudbury Arena. “The decision was made to ensure a welcoming, enjoyable, and safe atmosphere for all participants, guaranteeing the success of the event and providing the best possible environment,” Fierté Sudbury Pride said in a release.

Recommended Videos “While we continue to monitor air quality, we are committed to ensuring a vibrant experience regardless of conditions, allowing adequate planning time for our vendors, performers, and community partners.” Sudbury had been under an air quality warning on Wednesday due to wildfire smoke from northwestern Ontario that has spread across much of Ontario and parts of Canada and the United States. Environment Canada lifted the warning on Thursday.

The Air Quality Health Index predicts a low risk for Friday morning, before moving to high risk by Friday evening and Saturday. The Air Quality Health Index said high risk means that people with heart or lung conditions, older adults, children, and those who are pregnant should consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities. The general population may experience symptoms such as eye irritation, coughing, or throat irritation during prolonged outdoor exertion.

Pride organizers said that while they remain hopeful for clearer skies on Saturday, the shift to the Sudbury Arena ensures a safe, breathable, and enjoyable atmosphere for all participants, performers, and volunteers. There is also a good chance of rain on Saturday. For now, the Pride parade, scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m., will remain outdoors, but organizers said that is subject to review.

If needed, N95 masks will be available for those who attend Saturday’s festivities. “Our priority remains providing a welcoming, enjoyable, and safe event,” said Pride treasurer Alicia Irwin. “Relocating to the arena allows us to ensure the best possible experience while maintaining the high-energy celebration our community expects.”

“Pride is about resilience and coming together as a community,” added Jeff MacIntyre of Downtown Sudbury. “Moving to the Sudbury Arena allows us to keep the spirit of Pride alive and accessible while prioritizing the health and safety of everyone involved.” Organizers credited City of Greater Sudbury staff for quickly helping them move their Saturday events to the arena.

“Organizers extend a special thank you to the municipal team for their support, particularly as many staff members and managers assisted on short notice to ensure the event could proceed safely,” the release said. “We are incredibly grateful to the City of Greater Sudbury and its dedicated staff for their rapid response and decisive actions, which were instrumental in facilitating this relocation.” Updated schedule These events will now take place inside the Sudbury Arena on Saturday:

Noon to 4 p.m., Pride Vendor Market Music, all-day fun, and local vendors. 1 p.m. Workshop: Punk Pins Interactive session making custom punk pins.

2:30 p.m. Workshop: Banner Community banner creation for the march. 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sudbury Pride March

The community march is currently planned to take place on the street following the market. “We will assess local conditions closer to the event to make a final determination,” organizers said. 7:30 to 11 p.m.
