Woman, 23, killed in Aurora crash, other driver charged with aggravated DUI

A 23-year-old woman was killed in a crash in Aurora and the other driver has been charged several felonies, including reckless homicide and driving under the influence causing death, according to police.

One person was confirmed dead in a two-vehicle crash in northeastern Aurora while the other driver, who is in critical condition, was charged with several felonies, including reckless homicide and driving under the influence causing death, authorities said. The Aurora Police Department announced a 23-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the hospital following the July 11 crash. Her identity has not yet been released.

The other driver, Irven Pinedo, 30, of Aurora, remains in the hospital in critical condition, authorities said. After an investigation by the Aurora Police Department, the charges against Pinedo were approved by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, police said in a news release. Pinedo is charged with five felony counts of aggravated DUI causing death, five felony counts of aggravated DUI with two prior offenses, one felony count of reckless homicide and one felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, police said.

He was also charged with multiple misdemeanors for alleged DUI and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to authorities. Aurora police responded around 10:49 p.m. July 11 to the intersection of Church Road and Butterfield Road. The woman was driving a blue Hyundai sedan and Pinedo was driving a gray Toyota pickup truck.

The Aurora Fire Department transported both drivers to the hospital. An autopsy on the woman was conducted on July 13. During the traffic investigation, the roadways was closed several hours overnight.

Police say their investigation indicates the Hyundai was traveling west on Butterfield Road and attempting to turn left onto southbound Church Road when it was stuck by an eastbound Toyota pickup truck. “This is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of a young life, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones,” Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas said in the release. “As our investigators continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding this crash, it is an important reminder of the devastating consequences that can result when someone chooses to drive while impaired.”
