Apple is developing a new API that will allow Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses and Quest headsets to automatically pair across multiple Apple devices just like AirPods do. According to documentation found on Apple’s public EU Interoperability Request portal, this upcoming feature will allow a user to pair a Meta device with their iPhone once and have it immediately available on their iPad or Mac without any annoying extra prompts. The move comes as a direct response to a regulatory request Meta filed under Europe‘s Digital Markets Act.

This regulation forces Apple to open up a connectivity feature it has fiercely guarded for years. The battle of the Bluetooth frameworks The tech giant expects to finalize development by spring 2027. So, the feature will likely drop alongside a future iOS update.

To make the system secure, Apple told Meta it will share cryptographic session keys on a per-accessory basis, requiring one-time user consent to bridge the communication gap between competing hardware brands (via AppleInsider). However, a massive corporate chess match is playing out behind the scenes regarding how this feature actually works. Apple is building this entire API on top of its newly designed AccessorySetupKit (ASK) framework.

Meta is fighting back against this decision, arguing that making them use ASK would mean giving up Core Bluetooth altogether. Core Bluetooth is the specific scanning framework they use to handle connecting to devices globally except in Europe. Meta has begged Apple to decouple the two systems so they can coordinate the multi-device syncing using their own cloud network.

Apple has flatly declined, pointing out that other tech firms have successfully used the ASK framework outside of the EU without major headaches. As it stands, Apple is moving forward with its own blueprint, keeping the feature locked strictly as a European exclusive. The firm has noted that a global rollout is merely something they are still considering.

Defending the home turf It is easy to see why Apple is making things as difficult as possible for its rival. Keeping the Bluetooth connection seamless is one of the strongest lock-in mechanisms keeping users tied to iPhone accessories. Plus, rumors suggest Apple is quietly working on its own proprietary smart glasses, which are expected to drop toward the end of 2027.

Opening up their secret sauce to their direct virtual reality competitor right before launching their own hardware would essentially give away their biggest home-field advantage. By restricting the API to the EU and forcing Meta to re-engineer their entire pairing setup, Apple is complying with the letter of the European law while keeping the drawbridge firmly raised for the rest of the world.
