Obituary of Marian Barnett (née McKinnon) The family of Marian Barnett is deeply saddened to announce her passing at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, Ontario on Saturday, July 11, 2026 with her loved ones at her side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Marian was born in Sudbury on September 29, 1940 to Helen McKinnon (Mulligan) and D.L. McKinnon, both predeceased.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, wife, sister and aunt. In her earlier days, she attended elementary school in Sudbury and high school at St. Joseph’s College in Toronto, and was a graduate of Laurentian University. Marian became a Catholic sister and began a career in teaching that took her to many communities in Ontario.

At Marymount College in Sudbury, she taught English and Art for many years, touching the lives of young people. Marian married her first husband Dan English in 1973, was the beloved mother of Stephen, Alexis (Trevor Denis), Megan (Dale Morningstar) and Philip English and was a loving grandmother to Shayla and Cameron Denis and Chloe Morningstar. Marian was the beloved wife of Mike Barnett and step-mother of Allain Barnett (Chrissie Bausch) and step-grandmother of Simone Barnett.

She will be deeply missed by her sisters Delphine McKinnon and Bonnie McKinnon (Michael Schwartzkopf), and by her many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her dear brothers Malcolm and Daniel are predeceased. Marian led a full and loving life in her many roles, and was a beacon of kindness and positivity.

She actively pursued her interests including as an avid water colour artist producing hundreds of paintings and sketches, and her love of literature as a board member of the Little Current library. In past and recent years, she was featured in Manitoulin art tours, and enjoyed book clubs, travelling and practicing Tai Chi. Marian and Mike built their home together on Manitoulin Island, where they enjoyed boating, gardening and welcoming family and friends.

Marian expressed the sacredness of life in all she did and touched everyone she knew with her faith, hope and light. Donations can be made by cheque or online to the Sudbury Manitoulin Children’s Foundation or Masses payable to the St. Bernard’s Church in Little Current. Visitation at the Cooperative Funeral Home, 222 Lasalle Boulevard, on Friday, July 17, 2026 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Mass at Holy Redeemer Church, 1887 Bancroft Drive in Sudbury, on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at 11:00 a.m.
