Bell Builds First Satellite Ground Station for Coverage Beyond Cell Towers Bell has finished constructing its first direct-to-device satellite ground station in Québec. This new facility is a big step to providing mobile coverage to Canadians in areas well beyond the reach of traditional cell towers. The ground station is designed to connect with AST SpaceMobile’s satellite constellation.

Once the system is fully operational, it will link this space-based cellular network directly with Bell’s ground-based infrastructure. This setup means Bell customers will be able to use regular smartphones to stay connected in remote regions. Integration testing has already begun at the Québec site.

Bell has successfully completed tests for text messaging, voice calls, video calls, and broadband data. Over the next few weeks, the company plans to test video streaming, internet-of-things devices, and public emergency alerts. “Delivering Canada’s best networks means finding new ways to connect customers beyond the reach of traditional wireless coverage.

The satellite ground infrastructure we’re building is designed to support a full suite of direct-to-device capabilities, including messaging, data connectivity, voice calling, and video streaming, helping extend connectivity to remote and underserved areas. Together with Bell’s world-class wireless network, it will help keep customers connected wherever they live, work and travel,” said Mark McDonald, EVP and Chief Technology Officer, Bell, in an issued statement on Wednesday. Because the infrastructure is built locally, all user data and network traffic will remain within Canada.

Bell is currently constructing additional satellite ground stations in Ontario, Alberta, and Newfoundland and Labrador to expand this service nationwide. Last fall, Bell said it was going to launch direct to cell satellite connectivity this year. As for pricing?

Expect to pay $10 to $15 per month, while top plans are set to include connectivity built in. Telus is also going to use AST SpaceMobile for satellite connectivity. Rogers is currently using SpaceX’s Starlink for direct to mobile connectivity, which is also available for anyone to use.
