Sunday July 12, 2026 | CALGARY, AB by Mary P Brooke | Island Social Trends Prime Minister Mark Carney has been spending this weekend at the high-energy, high-profile Calgary Stampede. Carney attended the annual rodeo and exhibition Saturday night, reportedly enjoying mini doughnuts and watching chuckwagon races. Today he was scheduled to stop at a Stampede breakfast then head to the Stampede grounds.

He’s been wearing a cowboy hat, blending in with the crowds. Perhaps symbolically, the hat is white — i.e. one of the good guys. Alberta is territory where the Liberals have not been popular for decades, particularly when Trudeau prime ministers (senior and junior) were leading the country.

East-west progress: Carney was in Calgary on July 2 to announce a plan for the new oil pipeline, along with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. In recent days, Prime Minister Mark Carney has said he’s optimistic the pipeline from Alberta to the BC coast will get done. Polling across the country evidently shows it has majority support.
