City, Fire & Emergency Services appeal for water safety; watch for hazards With temperatures forecast to reach into the 30s this weekend, many of us will be out trying to cool off in places like the Oldman River. Lethbridge Fire & Emergency Services Water Rescue team lead Charles Schoening says to keep in mind there are hidden dangers even with river levels having dropped since the start of the week. “If you’re floating the river, especially, you need to be aware of ‘sweepers,’ which are trees that could have gathered onto the river’s edge and they can be a very, very dangerous situation,” Schoening warns.

“So, you’re going to want to be a little more aware of those things. Also, remember that the High Level Bridge is private property. It is never safe to recreate there and we would never recommend anyone recreating in that area.”
