Clarington says staff are spending too much time monitoring and removing campaign-related comments on the municipality’s social media posts. The municipal election campaign period is underway and until it’s over in October, Clarington has decided to temporarily disable comments on its social media channels. A statement says they have a responsibility to remain non-partisan and make sure municipal resources aren’t used for campaigning during an election period.

Even though they’ve been moderating the comments, campaign-related content and links are still being posted and staff are now spending more time removing those comments outside of regular business hours. Officials say it’s putting additional pressure on municipal resources and redirects staff time from regular service delivery.
