Article content GODERICH – Twenty-four secondary students completed the fifth annual Discovery Healthcare Camp put on by Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health (CERH). Led by medical students from Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, students across Huron County and beyond heard presentations from medical professionals, gained hands-on experiences through team activities, and toured the medical facilities at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital. Throughout the week, it has been incredible to see the students’ curiosity come to life. They’ve asked thoughtful questions, explored every opportunity to learn, and shown a genuine interest in health care careers. Inspiring young people early is essential to building a strong, skilled workforce that will continue to provide exceptional care for our communities for years to come,” said Jimmy Trieu, president and CEO of Huron Health System.

The camp was launched in 2022, aiming to provide youth interested in the health sector with opportunities, coaching and experience to demonstrate the many paths the medical field has to offer. “Having an experience like this allows the students to experience all types of health care careers beyond just doctors and nurses. It is so influential for them to hear about the day-to-day lifestyle of these careers and this camp will shape their choices in their future career” said medical student and camp leader Julia Sawicka.

Campers were also visited by local health organizations such as Huron County Paramedic Services, Alexandra Marine and General Hospital, and Maitland Valley Family Health Team. “This camp will help these students consider a career in health care. We know this initiative is so important as we face a critical shortage of health care professionals, especially in rural communities such as ours,” said Gwen Devereaux, president of Gateway CERH.

The camp took place July 6-10 at Camp Klahanie, which was donated by the Goderich Lions Club.
