Downtown Victoria filled with the sounds of mariachis as the 20th Festival Mexicano kicked off at Ship Point Saturday. Miguel Espinosa, president of the Mexican Canadian Community Association of Victoria, says the celebration of Mexican culture has grown exponentially since he moved here. “I’ve been here almost 40 years, and I see how my community is growing.

When I came here years ago, there were few of us. Now with hundreds, even thousands of Mexican and Latino Americans here and they bring some flavour to Victoria.” The annual fiesta brings an array of food trucks, vendors, dancing, and live music to the Inner Harbour.

Over the weekend, organizers expect thousands of people to take part in the festivities. Watch the full story in the video below: Loading the player... “We have around 2,000 to 3,000 throughout the days, but especially when they come across the cruise ships, we can have another 2,000,” said Espinosa.

“When the cruise ships are around, they bring in a mass of people to the festival.” Festival attendee Talia Manga says they learned about Mexican culture through a Spanish teacher who introduced her to salsa dancing. “I learned a lot about Latin culture, and I just really appreciated how much history they have.

It’s very beautiful.” Other attractions at the festival include a beer garden, performances of Ballet Folklorico, and a kids’ zone where many piñatas await their fate. The festival is on all weekend and entry is free.
