EDMONTON – It didn’t take long for a potential candidate to emerge looking to take over a key Edmonton riding for the Alberta NDP that’s currently held by party leader Naheed Nenshi. Former journalist, school board official and federal NDP candidate Trisha Estabrooks says she’ll be seeking the NDP nomination for Edmonton-Strathcona ahead of the 2027 provincial election.

Estabrooks’ announcement comes a day after Nenshi, who won the seat in a byelection last year, announced he will be running in Calgary in the next election. Estabrooks ran federally last year in Edmonton-Centre, but came in third behind the Conservative candidate and the Liberal’s Eleanor Olszewski, who now serves as emergency management minister. The former Edmonton Public School Board chair says she wants to join the fight for a new provincial government.

Edmonton-Strathcona is a flagship riding for the Alberta NDP and was previously held by former premier Rachel Notley before she stepped down, leading to Nenshi’s byelection win last year. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 17, 2026.
