Cambridge ceremony celebrates Ontario Cup champions and Olympic gold medallists while launching community soccer time capsule.
More than 120 years after they made soccer history, the Galt Football Club is still giving Cambridge something to cheer about. The city’s championship team from the early 1900s was honoured this week with a provincial commemorative plaque recognizing its place in Ontario and Canadian soccer history. The plaque, presented by the Ontario Heritage Trust, recognizes the club as the first winner of the Ontario Cup and celebrates its gold-medal victory at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis.
Community members, local leaders, heritage advocates and soccer supporters gathered at Cambridge City Hall for the unveiling before the plaque was installed in Dickson Park, where residents and visitors can learn about the team’s achievements. The event also marked the first Cambridge stop for the Ontario Soccer Hall of Fame’s travelling Soccer Time Capsule. The time capsule is collecting soccer memories from communities across Ontario.
Residents are invited to share photographs, memorabilia, stories or other soccer-related items while it is in Cambridge. The display will remain at Cambridge City Hall until July 24. Contributions can be dropped off at city hall between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
