An injured construction worker was rescued by Ottawa firefighters after he fell from a ladder into a pit at a construction site in the city’s east end on Tuesday. Emergency crews were called to the 1200 block of Hemlock Road around 3:12 p.m. “The worker was approximately 18 feet down a steep embankment and unable to get out due to injury,” Ottawa Fire Services public information officer Nick DeFazio said.

“Our rope rescue team began setting up for the rescue while firefighters made contact with the worker and prepared the patient for removal in a stokes basket. An aerial ladder was also set up to serve as an anchor point.” The worker was hoisted out of the pit with a rope rescue technician attached to the basket and transferred into the care of paramedics, DeFazio says.

Ottawa paramedics spokesperson Nicolas Guertin says crews treated an adult man on scene for a compound femur fracture. The man was transported to hospital by ambulance in serious but stable condition.
