Langley City pilot program aims to build stronger community

Resilient Neighbourhood Network is a new program that rolls out in the Nicomekl area

Nicomekl is the Langley City neighbourhood that will kick off a new initiative intended to create a stronger sense of community. Langley City has officially launched its Resilient Neighbourhood Networks (RNNs) initiative. Resilient Neighbourhood Networks are a Citizens’ Assembly recommendation on Community Safety and Well-being endorsed by council in February 2026.

The RNNs are designed to help neighbours connect, get to know one another, share skills and information, and support one another, making communities safer, more welcoming, and better prepared. The results were announced Social Streets on June 26 at Linwood Park, 201A Street and Michaud Crescent. Social Streets was essentially a neighbourhood party with activities, food, information on local resources, and music.

The next such gathering is at Rotary Park (just behind Safeway) on Sept. 4 from 3 to 8 p.m. The Resilient Neighbourhood Network is a broader initiative with specific goals. Through the pilot, residents in the selected neighbourhoods will: • Build stronger local relationships with neighbours, • Access practical safety and preparedness information, and • Take part in and help lead community-led activities and shared learning opportunities.

Taking part are residents, local organizations, businesses, and City services, with the aims of allowing participants to strengthen connections and make it easier to find support close to home. Programming will include community meetings, shared meals and activities, and opportunities to learn about safety and local supports. “Resilient Neighbourhood Networks are about helping people feel connected and supported where they live.

Events like Social Streets bring people together, and improvements like the new shade sails at Linwood Park make it easier for residents to gather, spend time outdoors, and build those connections. Together, these investments help strengthen a sense of community across Langley City.” Nicomekl will launch first in summer 2026.
