'Everyday, we see bargain hunters, treasure hunters and sadly homeless and Saultites who cannot afford the big box stores,' writes a representative from Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands

SooToday received the following letter to the editor from Patty Frost of Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands Lately we have had quite a few people come in saying they thought we closed our doors. Helping Hands is still open and still at 346 Wellington St. W.

Everyday, we see bargain hunters, treasure hunters and sadly homeless and Saultites who cannot afford the big box stores. With rent and food some need to be able to shop where they can afford clothes, kitchenware etc. at a price they can afford. The homeless are given clothes and since we operate on a donation basis, people donate what they can.

We do have a Facebook page “Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands” and post pictures of items in the store. The general public can also post items they wish to give away.

Some post if they are in need of something and cannot afford a new item or are in need of assistance with food until their payday. Today our dollar does not go far and if you have a family, it can be difficult. We accept donations but unfortunately, we cannot accept furniture as we have no room and cannot store these large items.

At present we are in need of underwear and socks for both men and women. We are a registered charitable organization. With a donation of $25 or more we can issued a receipt for tax purposes.

You can email a donation to [email protected] or come into our thrift store at 346 Wellington St. W. Please ensure to include email or address in order to receive a receipt. Currently we have three board members. Robert Peace, Director; John Michael Korab, Vice-Director and myself.

At the moment I am filling two positions, Administrative Assistant to Director and Volunteer Coordinator. We are in need of more board members especially one in the financial area. If you have the time or are retired and need to keep busy let us know [email protected] Patty Frost Administrative Assistant to Director Sault Ste.
