Mix of Cochrane, Airdrie friends win $100,000 on LOTTO MAX

The group purchased their winning LOTTO MAX ticket from Shell, located at 10 Fireside Gate in Cochrane.

A group of former coworkers and friends from Airdrie, Calgary, and Cochrane are celebrating after winning $100,000 on the April 28 LOTTO MAX draw. Susan Crittenden (Cochrane), Ralph Crittenden (Cochrane), Cathie Weber (Airdrie), Lisa Beaulne (Calgary), Helen Dowey (Calgary), Doreen McLeod (Calgary), Shawn Graham (Airdrie), Stacey Hamilton (Cochrane), Marcella Campbell (Victoria, B.C.), and Steven Friesen (Cochrane) won their $100,000 prize on the new LOTTO MAX.

“We’ve had subscriptions for years, and I managed it for our work team when we all were working together,” Susan Crittenden said. “We started buying tickets together years ago-- we all used to be colleagues and I’ve retired since.”

Crittenden recalled the moment she discovered their win. “I was cooking dinner one night,” she said. “I checked the ticket on the [Lotto Spot] app and I thought, ‘Woah!'

When I saw those zeroes on my phone I didn’t believe it. I closed the app and went back in again!” After confirming the win, she quickly shared the exciting news with the group.

“I texted the group chat to let them know,” she said. “Ten minutes later, I got a call from Doreen and she said, ‘Is this a scam?’ I said, ‘No Doreen.’

She said, ‘OMG I can’t believe it!’” Crittenden said everyone was thrilled. “I have to say it’s nice to win as a group-- nowadays everyone can use a little extra cash!

Everybody responded that they were excited,” Crittenden added. The group already has plans for their winnings. Crittenden said she is looking forward to an upcoming getaway.

“I have a trip planned for August so this will pay for that,” she smiled. “And my sister is coming on the trip with me! I’m going to tuck the rest away for a rainy day.”
