The Waterloo Regional Police Service has installed more cameras with automated licence plate recognition technology.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service has installed more cameras with automated licence plate recognition technology. Cameras were added in Cambridge, North Dumfries and Waterloo, bringing the total number across the region to 10. Police say the cameras are used to support investigations and they will look at the footage and data from the cameras to help gather evidence.

Data regarding licence plates are compared to police databases to identify potentially stolen vehicles or wanted drivers. As of July 13, cameras have been installed in the following locations: Cambridge North Dumfries Waterloo Police said only authorized officers can access the footage, all activity must be logged and the videos are automatically deleted after 30 days.

The cameras do not have facial recognition. Police also have plans to install cameras in Kitchener.
