A little over a year after winning a byelection in Edmonton, replacing former NDP leader Rachel Notley, Naheed Nenshi has announced he’ll go back to more familiar surroundings for the next provincial election. Nenshi, who became NDP leader in 2024, posted to social media that “while I’ve been thrilled every day to serve as your MLA, I will be seeking election in a Calgary riding in the next general election.” “This will open up Edmonton-Strathcona for a new representative from this beautiful community,” Nenshi’s statement reads.

“I am informing you today so that the incredible constituency in this riding has time for a healthy and robust nomination process to select a candidate and a future MLA worthy of representing you.” Nenshi said that despite the announcement, he will stay on as MLA for the riding until the next campaign. It was not immediately clear which Calgary riding he would seek.
