The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says Airdrie RCMP received a 9-1-1 call at about 6:20 pm on July 3. A woman reported a domestic disturbance involving her boyfriend at a rural home near the town. Two officers responded.

As they approached the home, police say they could hear yelling coming from the inside. The woman then came out of the front door, ASIRT said. Two officers stayed outside the home near the entrance.

They called for the man to come out, but he did not answer. A few minutes later, the man came to the front door with what appeared to be a handgun and began walking toward police, ASIRT said. One officer fired his service pistol several times and struck the man.

The officers attempted first aid and called for paramedics. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and has not been publicly identified. Both officers body worn cameras recorded the shooting, ASIRT said.

No officers were hurt or injured during the altercation. STARS Air Ambulance attended the scene but did not transport anyone. A section of Highway 9, northeast of Calgary, was closed off with police tape later that night.

The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate the altercation as a Level 1 matter under the Police Act. Level 1 covers death, serious injury and serious or sensitive allegations about police. ASIRT will examine the use of force, and it can lay a charge if it finds an officer committed a criminal offence.

RCMP said it has also begun an internal review of the police response, training, policy and the officer’s duty status. “The RCMP believes in accountability and transparency and in so doing will provide full support to the ASIRT investigators”, RCMP say.
