Heavy black smoke came out from behind the house, says Richmond Fire-Rescue deputy chief.
Richmond Fire-Rescue quickly put out a fire behind a house near Cambie and Garden City roads after receiving a report from a passerby around noon on Wednesday. When crews arrived, they found a “tent structure” burning in the backyard, surrounded by heavy debris, Richmond Fire-Rescue deputy chief Trevor Northrup told the Richmond News. Crews extended a handline to the rear of the property and were able to extinguish the fire quickly, he said.
The fire produced “a large volume of black smoke,” which drew the attention of people nearby, he added. Although Northrup described it as “a small event,” he said it serves as a reminder for residents to remain alert as B.C.’s wildfire season continues. “The start of wildfire season is occurring earlier and earlier and extending later and later,” he said.
Richmond residents are urged to be mindful of potential ignition sources and to call 911 immediately if they see any signs of fire. The cause and the damage of the fire are under investigation by a fire investigator, said Northrup. 📣 Got an opinion on this story or any others in Richmond?
