To make matters worse, the executive explicitly stated that structural market demand will continue to aggressively outpace global manufacturing capabilities well into the next decade, stretching the component crunch all the way past 2030. Why the supply chain is starved The root of this massive bottleneck comes down to the ongoing artificial intelligence boom. Tech hyperscalers are spending hundreds of billions of dollars to build out complex AI data centers.
These require a premium, ultra-dense type of RAM called High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM). Because manufacturing HBM consumes an immense amount of raw factory wafer capacity and involves complex packaging, the “Big Three” memory producers—SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron—have completely shifted their manufacturing priorities. Standard DDR5 and entry-level mobile RAM and other traditional consumer-grade components are completely out in the cold as factory lines are prioritizing premium commercial infrastructure contracts.
While this corporate pivot has resulted in eye-popping financial profits for chipmakers, it has dealt a devastating blow to the retail sector. Tech heavyweights like Apple, HP, Dell, and Lenovo have already rolled out significant price hikes across their device lineups to offset the skyrocketing cost of components. Divided industry predictions While the outlook from SK Hynix sounds apocalyptic for consumer wallets, not everyone in the financial sector agrees on how long this hardware stranglehold will actually last.
Executives at Micron have backed up the warning, noting that current tight conditions are merely the “first innings” of a multi-year squeeze. On the other side of the fence, some market analysts are urging calm. A recent projection by Bloomberg Intelligence argued that the absolute worst of the global memory drought may have already peaked during the first half of 2026.
Their data suggests that hardware pricing could actually begin to stabilize slightly throughout 2027, potentially opening the door to a healthy market oversupply by 2028 as expensive new manufacturing facilities in the US and South Korea finally come online. The Android Headlines Take SK Hynix’s prediction seems a bit surprising considering what other major names in the industry have said. Big memory companies like Samsung and Micron targeted 2028 as the year where major shortages would begin to ease.
Both agree that 2027 could be the worst year regarding DRAM prices and availability, though. If we had to bet, SK Hynix is offering a projection based on their own production capabilities for these chips, reflecting that, for them, it will cost a little more to return to an optimal production point that allows them to satisfy the memory demand of the consumer market as well.
