Sudbury shooter still at large, police say

A fatal shooting took place inside a sports bar on Notre Dame Avenue Friday night in Greater Sudbury and police say the suspect is still at large.

Note: With the arrest of the suspect April 29, CTV News has removed images of the 16-year-old suspect in the case. — A fatal shooting took place inside Overtime Sports Bar and Grill on Notre Dame Avenue in Greater Sudbury on Friday evening around 10:30 p.m., the Greater Sudbury Police Service said in a tweet .

According to police, the suspect is still at large. “The shooter fled and has yet to be located,” said police. Police advised the public they were investigating the incident via Twitter just before 11:15 p.m. on Friday.

“A heavy police presence is in the area and a K9 track is underway,” said police. “We are requesting that you remain out of the area while police conduct their investigation updates will follow.” Police said officers were dispatched in relation to a weapons complaint in a news release Saturday morning.

A 22-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services , the news release. “Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries in hospital and was pronounced deceased by medical professionals,” said police. Insp.

Robert Norman told CTV News that they are not releasing the victim’s name at this time out of respect for the family, to allow them some time to deal with the situation. Information provided as part of the police investigation indicates that multiple men were involved in a verbal altercation inside the sports bar that lead to one of the men shooting another with a gun. Officers have not officially commented on the results of the K9 track but did confirm shortly after 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning that the shooter was still at large.

“The other men involved in the incident including the man responsible for the shooting fled the area prior to police arrival,” police said in the release. The criminal investigation division has released two photos of the suspected shooter. “A group situation like that, anytime a firearm is involved or any weapon for that matter, it poses a great threat to the public,” said Norman.

“I can tell you based on the information we’ve learned in this investigation, we’ve isolated the incident to be a deliberate and intentional act by the suspects on an identified victim.” A heavy police presence could still be seen in the area through the early hours of Saturday morning. “Tonight there was an isolated act of violence that is being investigated.

We currently have no information to provide to the public,” said Overtime in a statement posted to their Facebook page Friday night. “The safety and well-being of our patrons and staff is our top priority. We will respectfully provide information as we can.”

The sports bar expresses its condolences to the friends and family of the victim and has indicated they will be closed until Monday and their staff will continue to provide any assistance they can during this difficult time. Overtime has also directed customers to contact Sudbury and Area Victim Services if support is needed. There were still police vehicles at the scene Saturday morning around 8:00 a.m.
