Suspect killed in RCMP officer-involved shooting in Brooks

The RCMP has also launched its internal review process to establish a full account of the incident

One person is dead after an RCMP officer shot a suspect while officers were attempting to arrest someone on an outstanding warrant in Brooks, Alta. On Wednesday afternoon, RCMP officers went to a home in Greenbrook Village to arrest a person wanted on an outstanding warrant. Police said the man attempted to flee after officers knocked on the door, RCMP said in a written statement released late Wednesday.

A confrontation followed, during which police say the suspect produced a weapon, causing a RCMP officer to fire their gun, Mounties said. Officers provided life-saving measures, but the man died from his injuries. No RCMP officers were injured.

In accordance with legislative requirements, the Police Review Commission was immediately notified, the RCMP said, and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, the province’s police watchdog agency, will conduct an independent investigation. The RCMP has also launched its internal review process to establish a full account of the incident. The review will examine RCMP training, policy, the police response and the officer’s duty status.
