Uber is expanding, but not to the Sault

Mayor Matthew Shoemaker said the city has been in discussions with Uber to provide information about the Sault

Although Uber is expanding to northeastern Ontario, the ride-share service won’t be coming to the Sault anytime soon. Uber is coming to Greater Sudbury, Timmins and North Bay after the province announced the return of the Northlander passenger train service in May. “Uber is expanding where allowed by the Northeastern Provincial Rideshare framework,” the company told SooToday in a statement.

“This pilot marks the first move towards a set of clear, provincial standards for things like safety, insurance and driver screening, and we would be keen to expand further as new communities are added across the province.” Mayor Matthew Shoemaker said the city has been in discussions with Uber to provide information about the Sault. “Uber is permitted to operate locally under our Vehicles for Hire bylaw, and city staff will remain in touch with them to ensure we are considered in future expansion plans.”
