Westlock RCMP warn of fake Alberta health ID scam

Westlock RCMP are warning residents about fake text and email messages claiming Albertans must renew their new health ID cards.

A new fraud is sweeping Westlock County after several residents reported receiving a strange request via text message and email. The scam artists are taking advantage of the Alberta Government’s recent announcement of the combining of driver's licences, Alberta Health Care cards and citizenship document status. “There’s usually some sort of scam going on.

This is a relatively new one, and we were able to come across it early on in its going out and notify our residents,” said S/Sgt. Jeff Sehn for the Westlock RCMP detachment. The messages from random emails and phone numbers state that residents need to renew their card through a link provided to maintain uninterrupted service.

The web address looks like one that would lead to the Government of Alberta's webpage. The Westlock RCMP want residents to be aware that no official request would come through via text message and to report the activity to 9-1-1 or the RCMP detachment as soon as you receive it.. Scams like this are common across the country and should be reported to the authorities as they are happening.

“Anytime it’s reported by the RCMP, we conduct an investigation and an attempt to identify the perpetrators of it,” said Sehn. “Unfortunately, a lot of the time, it’s being based out of a place overseas, and usually the trail goes cold fast.” The best way to prevent scammers from receiving information is to secure any online information and passwords, monitor accounts, verify anyone you may be speaking with, avoid giving out personal information and watch out for any urgent pleas or high-pressure tactics that play on emotions.

The Electronic Health Identification scam places fear that by not confirming through the link, disruptions at pharmacies and health care providers may occur. If you suspect you have been defrauded, report the incident to the police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
